Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) are the main products processed in RTOs and TOs. The usual running temperatures for RTOs are around 815 °C to 980 °C and have regenerative thermal oxidizer efficiency of up to 97%.

This is done using multiple chambers and is used at low processing VOC concentrations that require continuous working for a long time. RTOs are more useful and preferred to be used in places that allow space for proper and thorough ventilation, such as paper mills, paint booths, and printing facilities.

TOs are cooler than RTOs; they run at temperatures around 760° C and have a lower regenerative thermal oxidizer efficiency than RTOs, about 80%. However, they do destroy and deplete harmful substances at a much higher rate, almost 99.99%. Meanwhile, RTOs can only produce a VOC destruction efficiency of 99%.
